Towering above the town of Murau is Murau Castle, owned by the Schwarzenberg family. The castle can only be visited as part of a guided tour. Guided tours through the castle, including the picture gallery, kitchen, dungeon and chapel, offer a vivid insight into life behind the castle gates, the history of rule and the House of Schwarzenberg, and of course the chronicles of Murau Castle itself.

Nowadays the castle is operating as a youth camp. Its speciality is that at the beginning of the last century a Hungarian patrician family bought it and then rebuilt it in the style of the 13th century.

This castle, originally built in the 12th century and today its ruins, rise above the Mur valley at 1.180 meters over sea level. The ruins of the castle can be reached by a short walk. Along the way visitors can enjoy a breath-taking view.

Feel the spirit of the middle-ages in the castle of Mauterndorf which used to be the summer residence of the archbishops of Salzburg and was operated as a toll-centre as well.

The caste was first mentioned in 860. In 1571 Geoerg Khevenhüller bought the castle, established the gun room built the 14 gates.
